What Do I Worship (Part 1)

This is the next article to be posted around the topic of worship in an endeavour to hopefully bring some thought and understanding about an important part of our lives that is often misunderstood. It's important to remember that Theology and Passion need to co-exist.

Thanks to Nathan Lawrenson for the material. Hope you enjoy. Feel free to comment or ask questions.

You can tell what a person worships by the way he lives his life.

So, how do you know what you worship? It’s easy. You simply follow the trail of your time, your affection, your energy, your money, and your allegiance. At the end of that trail you’ll find a throne; and whatever, or whomever, is on that throne is what’s of highest value to you. On that throne is what you worship.

Matthew 6:21 says, “Where you’re treasure is, there your heart will also be.”

And the trail never lies. We may say we value this thing or that thing more than any other, but the volume of our actions speaks louder than our words. In the end, our worship is more about what we do than what we say.

Personally I would never worship Steven Gerrard.

But on a more serious note, this post is a real challenge to most of us. No pride here, I place myself at the top of the list of offenders.

I think giving time to God is probably the toughest challenge for most Christians today.

We live in a fast-paced society. Everything is convenient, we don't have to wait for anything. We complain when McDonalds takes more than 2 minutes to give us our food.

Perhaps our reluctance to spend time with God is based on the fact that it requires us to slow down. True worship involves waiting on the Lord. We frequently ask God for things, but our familiarity with instant service causes us to get frustrated after just two minutes without an answer, let alone a week or more.

Perhaps we should stop thinking of ourselves as greedy clients. At McDonalds we believe we have the right to demand service, because the client is always right. With God we behave the same, but we would do well to observe that the promises of God are privileges, not rights! We're in a position to petition and inquire of the Lord, not make demands.

I know for me personally, much of my private time is spent watching sport. Call it instant gratification... I want to watch sport, I've paid for my TV or DSTV, and I know if I put on that TV I'll get what I want immediately cause I've paid for it. Watching sport makes me feel good, and it's easy. Not much sacrifice involved. Perhaps that's why it's become a god for me. (Ouch, this is getting painful).

So my challenge for myself and for all the other readers who for some reason thought that a post by stuart would be interesting... to slow down, relax and give God some of the time he deserves!

Good comment bro - I have one question - how the heck do you type so fast!

I told you, I'm influenced by the fast-paced society I live in. How do you do it? You must tell me the secret of how you humble yourself to type so slowly.

he, he, he... took years of denying self... that and a healthy dose of "no skill"

Actually...most of that post came from Louie Giglio, so I can't take credit, but thanks anyway!
